State could do more

The State of Mississippi, namely the Governor, could do much more to facilitate and announce the opening of public shelters in central and north Mississippi for fleeing coast residents. It seems that the underlying reason that State leaders do not do this is because they see hurricane evacuation from the south part of the State, as economic development in the central and north parts of the State by justifiably urging residents to evacuate, but then providing no option but to pay for motel rooms. Many people cannot find available hotel rooms in the region and there are some that cannot afford it. It is very awkward to jump in the car and drive north and have no idea where you can go, especially when conditions throughout most of south Mississippi are going to deteriorate. The Coast would see a better evacuation rate if the State could open places such as the Jackson Coliseum as well as other facilities in Jackson, Meridian, Vicksburg, and other cities. If the Governor and MEMA want to provide a service beyone words to the residents of South Mississippi, let them provide some shelter coordination for those they urge to evacuate. Then let them publicly announce where residents can go, right after they suggest that they leave. -- Rick Galle
